Well I’m still walking without the crutches which feels great.  I’m going up stairs with no problem, still not comfortable going down stairs though.  Yesterday at therapy my PT had me do 15 minutes on the bike (I can finally pedal around going backwards), a mile on the treadmill (walking) and really starting bending my knee to get my extension and flexion.  Needless to say my knee was pretty sore last night and today but I know this is a good thing.  Hopefully at PT today he will work me harder than yesterday.  I’ve realized that most of my lack of flexion and extension are mental things.  It feels great to be doing more.  I also ordered an exercise bike and it should arrive today when I get home from therapy.  I would recommend this to anyone who has the surgery.  Riding on an exercise bike is good to strengthen your knees even if you don’t have any problems, and it is even better for rehab.

  1. Hey mate, your progress sounds excellent. I don't think I was able to cycle as fast as you. I was sooo glad when I finally managed to do a full revolution!

I have a blog too which details my life, including my ACL surgery, so if you want, feel free to check it out.

Keep up the posts, I find it's a good way to go back to see how you felt at times and it's amazing how fast you recover.

  2. Thanks for reading, I read some of your blog it’s very detailed and interesting. My PT had me walking backwards on the treadmill yesterday after I got off my knee felt excellent, it felt like I could run on it. I’m just having one problem when I go to therapy and start using my knee it feels excellent but when I get home and wake up it feels so stiff and my limp becomes worse. Did you have this problem? Do I just need to be stretching and using it more?

  3. Yeah I had the same thing. It's a bit like an old car - overnight it stiffens up, so you have to 'warm it up' a bit (by doing the exercises) to get it going.

I used to do my knee exercises in the morning, which really helped for the rest of the day (I'd also do them at night).

It may be a bit soon to ask you, but how does your incision area feel? For me, it's causing a bit of tightness, especially when I try to bend my knee. My PT told me something about fat having grown vertically while I was recovering. He massaged it for about 10 mins once which made it feel a whole lot better, but unfortunately that was my last session with him.

It might be something you want to keep an eye out for after a month or two. Also, thanks for reading my blog :)

  4. It’s the same for me with the area around the scar. It feels very stiff when I touch it. And sometimes on the left side of my knee feels a little numb. My PT said this was normal though. My swelling is now going down quite a bit. I ditched the brace for good and overall my knee feels better. I think it’s because I use it more now.
